2 more days...

at my current job. Yay! Just got to get everything done and get out. Then I have a week and a half off and I start at the DA's office. I'm excited; it's going to be an adventure.

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

I've been trying to give notice at work for days. The boss has been out of the office for over a week. He was finally back today and every time I tried to catch him to give notice he was gone or in a closed door meeting, etc. I got called into another boss' office and she never seemed mad at me, but kept talking in vague generalities about being professional and on the same page as my secretary, etc. It was really strange. One thing she was talking about was my future in the firm. That made me realize that I needed to give notice immediately because I couldn't let it go any later. So I e-mailed the two bosses my resignation. I feel really strange and I'm going to have to deal with them in the morning. Also, I have a final tomorrow night that I need to study for. Unfortunately my concentration and brain cells are shot. I need a miracle!

Communism alive and well in the US. The bosses just blocked access to personal e-mail sites on the work computers. Yeah.

Jingle Ball 2009

I randomly got to go to Jingle Ball yesterday. Lauren's dad got free tickets from his friend, Commander Chuck, who does traffic reports for KIIS. It was fun to go because it was something definitely out of the ordinary and I got to hang out with Lauren.

Out of the whole line-up, Taylor Swift was the only one I knew and the only one I truly enjoyed. Seriously, Lauren and I couldn't figure out why some of the "artists" are even famous or being paid to "sing." Anyway, that's a debate for another day.

Taylor Swift was adorable in a sparkly, silver, fringe dress and boots. The way she acts and moves surprised me - at the end of each song she would smile and look around like she was coming out of a trance. The hair and head flipping was pretty impressive; I wouldn't be surprised if she ends up with neck and head issues in the future. I liked that she introduced most of her songs with a story. She's a good live performer, very eloquent and I wouldn't mind seeing her perform again.

Color me purple

embrace the purple

Hmmm...this question truly intrigued me. I'd probably pick purple; it's pretty and I wear it the most out of any color. My second choice would be black. However, since black is considered the absence of color, maybe I'd get to wear purple and black for the year and get away with it. I'm glad I don't have to wear only one color for a whole year; I'd probably end up hating purple really fast!

My Thanksgiving

Over half of my family went to Arizona for Thanksgiving. I stayed back as did two of my brothers. My brothers went to their girlfriends' houses and I had Thanksgiving dinner with my grandparents. It was a nice different-quiet, no strife or stress. Abby came with me and she cheered up my grandparents. She did scare my grandma by watching her sleep; my grandma said it was scary waking up to Abby's black face. :) "But Grandma, it's such a cute face to wake up to." I ended up having the house to myself that night for the first time ever; I cranked up the music, danced around and ate popcorn. I had fun.

Big Bang Theory the funniest show! If I could marry it and have its babies, I totally would. Watch it, people, watch it!

I didn't dress up on Halloween, but I'm dressing up a week later. Next Friday I'm going to a costume birthday party and I'm dressing up as an Orion in a Star Trek uniform. I'm looking forward to turning green, which isn't something you hear every day!

On a Hope and a Prayer

I was scheduled to take the deposition of a guy who was alleging a groin injury. And boy, I didn't want to go there. I was really hoping he wouldn't show up. Well, he did. However, I entered into settlement negotiations with his attorney before we started the deposition. After an hour and a half, we reached a settlement agreement and everyone was happy! I think I was the happiest. Turns out that not wanting to take a deposition and pressing for settlement can be a good combination. I am so thankful. God saved me from having to go there.

More Pumpkins
Originally uploaded by pbruch
I'm ready for fall. I like summer, but I'm ready for a change. I know that usually October is still warm here in southern CA, but I can dream. It has been cooler the last few days at least. I really like that it has started to get darker earlier though.

I think I need to buy a pumpkin for my office at work. That will help my office feel more friendly and festive.

And even though I don't any plans, I'm excited about Halloween.

October, I'm glad you're here.

This show is hilarious, seriously. Watch it, people!

It's my birthday today and it was a good one. Of course, I went to Disneyland and then later had a family dinner. The only problem is that I really don't want to go to work tomorrow. Really, really don't. And thinking about work on my birthday is depressing. Anyway, I had a great birthday weekend and I'm blessed with great friends and family. Here's to another year in my life; I pray that it will be a good one.

Ain't Feelin' Great

My throat is scratchy and my back hurts. I haven't had a cold in a really long time and I hope to keep this streak up. If the scratchy throat goes away, I think I'll stay healthy.

But it's more than physical for me. Things are changing and it's unsettling. I made a decision to go back to school while working and now I'm questioning my decision. I told one of my bosses about my decision and she handled it well. However, she's not the only one who can fire me. And it isn't like I'm completely sold on my job. Right now, I'm sold on stability and keeping my job for now. I'm starting to second guess this decision.

Other changes - one brother got engaged and pretty much only talks about the wedding which is going to be in two years. You heard me right, two years. He can be seen looking through wedding magazines and searching websites at all hours. Another brother is going to live at my aunt's house during the week so he's closer to school. It's not that these changes are bad; they are just unsettling. I just need and want to find even footing again.

At least God is always there and will never change. I've got to keep reminding myself of that.

Hans Zimmer

I complain a lot. Complain, whine, gripe-you name it, I do it. It's a big way of communicating for me. And I'm trying to cut back. I don't like that I complain so much. It's not healthy or really mature for that matter. I brought this up to my mom today and she said that maybe I complain a lot because I was brought up this way. She's probably on to something. My dad complains practically non-stop and I definitely don't want to end up like him. So, here's to truly turning my troubles over to God and working on communicating in a healthier, more positive way.

Only in dreams

Last night I dreamed that I was laid off at work. Not such a shocking dream, I know. I once dreamed that I was Superman, but I couldn't fly very high or very fast. Problem was that people were trying to kill me and I couldn't get away fast enough. I actually had to calm myself down after I woke up by reminding myself that Superman could fly around the whole earth in seconds. Nice, huh? So, my most recent dream isn't exactly outrageous. It is more likely that I could be laid off than be a pretty lame Superman; however, being a lame Superman scares me more than being laid off. Analyze that.

"You will travel to many exotic places." Yes, please. Lately my fortunes from fortune cookies are lame and sometimes don't even qualify as fortunes. "You will do well in real estate, but not stocks." Gag me, that's not interesting. But traveling, I can get behind that one! It reminds me that I need to plan out trips and make them happen. I can't wait for things to just happen and opportunities to come my way; otherwise I'll never go to these exotic places. Hawaii is definitely on my travel list. How does Bora Bora sound to you?

My boss was talking about how he has an old soul and if he ever visits Paris he's going to recognize some of the sights because he's been there in a past life. To tell you the truth, I almost started laughing, but he was serious. He went on to say that he can tell whether people have an old or virgin soul. When his children were born, he said he looked into their eyes and could tell. Okay (insert skeptical voice inflection). And it got weirder - he turned to me and said he thinks I have a virgin soul. If you don't know, I don't have a good poker face. I'm pretty sure my face showed my skepticism. I had no response. Well, I take that back...everything I did think of wouldn't have been appropriate to say to my boss. So that's how I ended my work day. And I still don't know what to say.

My job is hurting me physically. I know that sounds dramatic, but it's true. Part of my job is writing letters, lots of them, and I write them by typing them out. I can handle a moderate amount of typing without a problem, but the amount that I do is too much for my left arm. I had wrist surgery to fix torn cartilage over three years ago and the rest of my arm was damaged somewhat as a result of the injury. My arm will never be the same.

I've noticed recently that I'm feeling a type of pain and weakness in my arm that I haven't felt for a long time. And it's disheartening and a bit scary. I got my hair cut today and sitting there with my arm resting at my side I felt pain I haven't felt since before or right after my surgery.

Something has got to give. I guess I'm going to have to start dictating my letters; not a great option for a very visual person, but my arm needs a break. Just another reason for finding another job.

Play Straight With Me

What drives me crazy is when someone says something one minute but then says something else another. All of a sudden the person is acting like I'm dumb for what I'm doing. Sorry for listening to you and believing you. Next time I won't listen to you.

Also I can't stand it when I'm told to do something in all seriousness, but then all of a sudden the person is joking. And this isn't when the request is something ridiculous. And then I'm a big joke and the person is laughing at me. So frustrating.

What happened to treating people the way you want to be treated? Is being respectful old fashioned?

What my shoes say about me

I'm comfortable and in southern CA. I'm wearing Rainbows, the best flip flops in the world. Lately my feet have been mad at me for getting a full time job, which means I get to wear heels practically every day. So my feet are rebelling against even the thought of putting them into shoes. Hence the Rainbows. And my feet are liking it. Tomorrow I'll be back to heels, but at least I gave my feet a break this weekend.

I'm a dog person

I love dogs! Oh, my dog just walked into my room and is now napping on my floor. Good timing, Abby! Dogs are really cute, they keep you company and they love you unconditionally. Abby is a black lab and she's great. She helped me get through law school and the bar by sitting with me while I studied, playing with me in the backyard on breaks and letting me hug her when I was overwhelmed. Dogs are truly a gift from God and I'm grateful to have Abby in my life.

A Whole New World

Today was my first day at work, and boy, what a day it was. The new things started hitting me immediately and kept coming throughout the day - I have an office, my Blackberry is on order, there are so many code sections and abbreviations I don't think I'll ever know any of them, I will have to dictate (what?!?) all letters and reports and my dictation machine (whatever it's called) is coming tomorrow, etc, etc, etc. I'm so tired!!! The only thing that helped me get through it was only focusing on the task at hand; whenever I found myself thinking about the future and handling things on my own I would start to feel a tightness in my chest and a sinking feeling in my gut. So, here's to taking one day at a time! Now I need to go to bed because I have to be at a fellow attorney's house tomorrow at 6:30 am (crying on the inside!) in order to make it to an 8:30 am court appearance in LA.

Stepping Onto the Ladder

It all happened so quickly and it was unexpected. So, I've found the ladder and have gotten onto the first step. It will be interesting to see what it's like to practice law. I'd better go pick out what I'm going to wear tomorrow.

Just Call Me the Cook

My last two days have been spent focusing on food. And no, it didn't include the "why did I eat so much" focus (well, maybe a little yesterday; I went to my grandma's so it was to be expected). This happened because I baked a bit and cooked dinner.

My mom likes to go to my grandparents' house once a week and hang out with them. Yesterday I decided to tag along and bake a chocolate chiffon cake with my grandma. It was a lot of fun. Chiffon cakes are a bit difficult, so with some missteps and a lot of laughs we finally got it in the oven. I'm glad I got to spend that time with my grandma, and, for those of you out there with a sweet tooth, the cake turned out great!

I decided not to ice the cake yesterday, but after tasting it I decided it needed icing. Since I ended up not working today, I got down to business making icing. I decided to make cupcakes as well because only half of the cake was left (due to having five brothers who eat things quickly that taste good) and a half batch of icing was too much for just the cake. Oh my, both the cake and the cupcakes are divine! It's pretty cool to have my choice of chocolate chiffon cake with fudge icing and/or French vanilla cupcakes with fudge icing for dessert. Well, after dinner I had both with some ice cream!

Oh and after all that baking I cooked dinner. Got to give my mom a break now and then. And now I need a break!

Oh, to be in Australia

I love, love, love traveling and the last time I traveled out of the country was to Australia in summer 2004. It was a wonderful trip and Australia is a great country! It was a Chapman University choir trip and we performed the Berlioz Requiem in the Sydney Opera House. Yes, it was amazing! I hope I get to visit again soon.

Our first stop was Sydney and then we went on to Cairns. Some of the highlights: cruise around the Sydney harbor, the Olympic stadium, lots of opals, McDonald's (really tasty!), rehearsals with the orchestra, Hard Rock Cafe to get a pin, St. Mary's Cathedral where we saw part of a wedding, dinner at the Sydney Tower Restaurant (like the Seattle Space Needle and it rotated), performing in the Sydney Opera House (spectacular!), the resort in Cairns, train trip to Kuranda (so gorgeous), holding a koala, learning how to throw a boomerang and spear at the Aboriginal Center and snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef (there's nothing else like it!). Ahh, now I really want to go back!

If I could tame a wild animal

I would have a koala bear as a pet. I held one when I went to Australia and they're so cute. I've heard koalas aren't that nice of animals so I think life would become a bit crazy.

Abandon Ship

I have to get out of my house! I've been working all day on applying and finding jobs to apply to, which means I've been home all day (except when I took Perry to and from school). And I feel like I'm suffocating. The air is stale, the walls are closing in on me, the brothers are annoying and I'm feeling stressed about getting a job. Oh, why did I have to turn on Oprah and listen to them talk about money and the recession?!? Well, I'm leaving. I'm going to go deposit my mini-paycheck. Hopefully that will be refreshing enough since everything else I want to get done today involves being at home.

Project Runway is coming back!

Heidi Klum
Originally uploaded by leigh39
For those of you who don't know, Project Runway's latest season has been on the back burner due to a pending lawsuit between NBC and the Weinstein Co. The lawsuit was over Weinstein moving the show from Bravo to Lifetime. Well, I was really happy to read in the newspaper this morning that the parties have settled the suit and Project Runway will be back in the summer!

I really love this show. I find it so fascinating to watch the designers create their own works of art week after week with so little time. Wow. Of course there is a lot of drama the whole time. Just thinking about it makes me excited! And I can't wait to see Tim Gunn, Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, Nina Garcia and the guest judges. I'm excited to watch the new season. And, while I don't know what changes, if any, the move to Lifetime will mean to Project Runway, I know that Project Runway will "make it work" and "carry on!"

Get a Move On It

I need to start posting more often and with more frequency. I don't like that if you come to this blog and scroll down the page you can still see my January posts. Boring! Since I'm in the middle of a job search, I often feel like I have nothing to write about. But from now on I'm going to get creative and come up with more things to talk about on this blog even if it doesn't seem to me like I have anything to report on.

The Horror of a Broken Laptop

Things Gone Bad
Originally uploaded by ¶î®åt
My laptop decided that it hated me today and more than once I felt like throwing it against a wall or just straight into a trash can. My mom gracious allowed me to hijack her laptop, which helped, but I still felt a bit helpless without my own computer to work on. It's a bit sad how dependent I've become on my computer. I'm on it for too many hours of the day looking up news, checking my e-mail, going on facebook, watching movies, etc. I felt angry, overwhelmed, anxious and helpless throughout the day, and this made me feel pretty lame.

The computer drama started this morning when I turned it on so I could work on two job applications. I was able to check my e-mail and get online for a bit, but then the computer went into standby by itself. It continued to do this every time I would get it back on. Once it did it while I was typing in my password to login to my computer. Even now I feel like throwing my laptop. Let's just say, this really set me back and I got only one of the job applications partially finished. Here's to hoping I can get it fixed or at least diagnosed tomorrow (hopefully for free).

I think this picture will overshadow my blog entry, but it's too funny to pass up and it fits with what I'm writing about.

Tonight, after I finished applying for two jobs, I went into my parents' room to get my dog. I told my mom I had circled a job to apply for but couldn't stand the thought of practicing in the area of toxic torts and asbestos litigation (sounds terrible, right?). My mom told me that this guy she works with said that I need to forget about criminal law and work in the area of water rights because that's where all the action is going to be soon. What?!? (hence the blog title :) Wow, water rights, exciting...not!!! And she kept saying it. I think she ordered me a book about the history of water in CA; I say I think because her coherency was waning (she was in bed and tired at the time). She then went on to tell me that this same guy told her that my former principal had a lumpy rug because she kept sweeping things under it. That's when I told her to have a good night. :) So, ladies and gentlemen, water rights is where you need to be!

Do you understand the picture now? Don't you say "What?" when you look at it? Well, if you don't, I do and that's why I chose it.

Pictures of the Week

Here are some interesting images I captured last Friday.

House in the street. (click on pictures to get full effect)
This house was moved from my brother's school to a lot a few streets over. It's considered historic so the city wouldn't allow it to be torn down. It was pretty cool to see it sitting at the end of the street waiting to be moved to its permanent location the next morning.

Guy carrying pizzas.
Right after seeing the house in the street, I had to go to the grocery store. My brother had the camera and when I saw this guy I got my brother to quickly take this picture. Who carries pizza like this?!?

I love Australia, the country. I visited Sydney and Cairns in 2004 and loved every minute of my trip. It's a beautiful country and a very pleasant place to be. I want to go back to Australia some day, hopefully soon.

When I heard Baz Luhrmann was directing a movie entitled Australia starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, I was excited. I've seen three of Baz's movies and thoroughly enjoyed them. Every Baz movie I've seen is unique, beautiful and compelling. And I love Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman.

I saw a screening of this movie before it was finished and it was fantastic! Even though there was a lot of work left to be done to the film, I could tell I was going to love the movie. And Baz Luhrmann was in the lobby of the movie theater after the screening! I thought it was really neat to see a filmmaker in the process of putting out his film. Megan, who realized it was Baz, was too star struck to do anything, but Christopher went up and told him it was amazing and not to change anything.

When the movie was released I saw it on opening weekend, if not opening day (can't remember). It was really good and beautiful. It was really interesting to compare the screening version and finished version. One of the differences was the addition of the film's score, which I loved. It really fit the movie and I immediately knew I wanted to own it.

Here's my problem. The score hasn't been released. I keep searching around online for information about its release and I haven't had any luck. I went to David Hirschfelder's website today and sent him an e-mail telling him how much I enjoyed his score and asking if he had any idea about its release. Well I got a response back a few hours later telling me that Fox and Bazmark have no immediate plans to release the score and they at don't know why. I have half a mind to send Baz and Fox an e-mail even if there's a big possibility I won't hear back from them. I really hope that the score is released at some point. At least I'll be able to own the movie at some point.

I love, love, love this whole blogging from flickr. So glad I remembered to ask Megan about how she was posting pictures on her blogs.

Anyway, I love photography and traveling (not that I know much about photography or get to travel often). But this picture tells it all. It's so beautiful and I'm dying to get to Hawaii. Ahh, I can't wait until I can make it there! Something to dream about.

I need to be more consistent in my posting. One of my many talents is procrastinating...

Thursday, January 15, 2009

Soon I'm going to really blog about Twilight - the movie and books. I have very strong reactions to them and Megan keeps telling me to blog about it. I want to wait until I finish Breaking Dawn before gushing on and on. Usually what happens is I start to feel bogged down by the book while reading it, have to take at least one break from it, and finally finish it. I usually make my opinions know throughout the whole reading process. Now Breaking Dawn is so much different than the other books and I can't find my balance with it. I don't know what I think about it yet...I'm on page 374 and I still have almost another 400 pages to go - I think that is totally ridiculous! Stephenie Meyer hasn't earned the right to write such a huge book. Ahhh! Okay, rant over. I feel like throwing the book though. (Megan, don't worry, I won't throw your book!) I think I'm going to have to take a break from reading it because I'm starting to lose my grip on reality, which isn't pleasant. Tomorrow I'm going to Disneyland for my brother's birthday, so I'll have to take a break from reading. Yeah!

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

It's kind of strange, but I can't really remember what Disneyland looks like after dark without the Christmas decorations. Megan and I went to Disneyland the day the Christmas decorations went up to celebrate that I passed the bar and I've been many times since then. I know I'm making it sound like I only been there during the Christmas holidays, but that is far from true. I've had my pass for many years and often I've gone more during the summer. I'll have to go to Disneyland soon and refresh my memory that it still looks magical without the Christmas lights and decorations.
